The Sky Blues Under 23s fell to a 1-5 defeat at the Alan Higgs Centre earlier today against Barnsley Under 23s.
It was a slow start to the game with nothing between the two sides, as both looked to try and get a hold of the game.
It took 24 minutes for the first shot on target in the game and it was through Victor Adeboyeso who saw his shot cleared off the line by Jordon Thompson.
However, the Sky Blues were unable to clear the rebound and it was a Barnsley trialist who fired past Corey Addai to make it 1-0 to the visitors.
Barnsley soon doubled their lead just five minutes later when Amir Berhavitz beat his man and cut inside, curling an effort into the lip left corner.
Jason Farndon’s side got one back almost immediately, when a trialist headed it past the ‘keeper.
Firstly, it was Josh Eccles who forced the Barnsley ‘keeper into a good stop and then on the follow-up Kyle Finn forced him into another save, but eventually the trialist was able to head the rebound into the back of the net.
City then looked to get that equaliser before the break, a ball whipped in from Chris Camwell was flicked on by Kyle Finn, but his effort went over the bar.
After the break, Barnsley restored their two goal advantage as their trialist got his second.
A free-kick was saved by Corey Addai, but he was unable to hold onto it and the rebound was fired in to make 1-3.
City looked for a second in the game, firstly Billy Stedman played a corner short to Kyle Finn and he looked for the top corner from range, but it went inches wide.
Stedman was involved again a few minutes later when his corner was met by the head of Jordon Thompson, but he couldn’t direct his effort on target.
Barnsley got their fourth in the 69th minute after Berhavitz was found in the box and converted from close range.
Minutes after the visitors fourth, Farndon’s side almost had their second when a Josh Eccles half-volley from the edge of the box was well saved.
81 minutes on the clock and Adeboyeso brought the ball down and got a shot away against Addai, but he pulled off the save.
Seconds later and Berhavitz almost had a hat-trick, but Addai was able to get down well to prevent the winger.
In what was the last bit of action of the game, Barnsley made it 1-5 after an Addai pass went only as far as Adeboyeso, who then lifted it over the ‘keeper to make it five.
