U23 REPORT: Coventry City 1-1 Bristol City - Ryan Haynes scores as Sky Blues draw

All square at the Alan Higgs Centre...

16 October 2017

Ryan Haynes was on the scoresheet as Coventry City Under 23s drew 1-1 with Bristol City Under 23s at the Alan Higgs Centre.

After a 30 minute cameo last week against Queens Park Rangers, Haynes started on the left wing of a midfield four, containing captain Dion Kelly-Evans, Tom Bayliss and Kyle Finn.

A back three of Reece Ford, Dominic Hyam and Darragh Leahy was protected by holding midfielders Callum Maycock and Josh Eccles, while Kwame Thomas led the line and Corey Addai was in goal.

In windy conditions at the Higgs Centre, keeping possession for long periods proved difficult in the early stages for both sides.

The first action of note came after 23 minutes, when Tom Bayliss slotted Kwame Thomas into the box, but Bristol City keeper Sesay was off his line quick to prevent Thomas.

The Sky Blues began to grow into the game more, and created further opportunities before the break. On 31 minutes, there was some good footwork from Kyle Finn to release Kelly-Evans on the right. His shot from 20 yards was always rising, and went over.

Shortly after, Callum Maycock got forward to test the keeper from 25 yards out but Sesay was well behind the shot and the two sides went into the break goalless.

After the interval, the Sky Blues continued to dominate territory.

Ryan Haynes went close when he nearly got on the end of Kelly-Evans’ deep cross, but the Bristol City defender did just enough to stop Haynes. Then followed a string of corners for the Sky Blues, as The Robins defence continued to be tested.

Eventually, the home team got the break through. Tom Bayliss, who was strong in midfield, found Haynes on the left wing. He cuts inside and hit a right foot shot, that was deflected off the defender and past the goalkeeper.

That was the last action for Haynes, who made way for Lewis Green. Jason Farndon made another change shortly after, with Jack Burroughs replacing Kelly-Evans.

The Sky Blues had more chances shortly after, Burroughs going close and then Bayliss forcing his way into the box after a strong run to test the Bristol City defence.

Against the run of play with just five minutes remaining, The Robins levelled the game when a whipped ball from a left wing free-kick was nodded in past Addai.

The game became scrappy in the final stages, and the Sky Blues were left to rue a dropped two points.

The next game for the Under 23s is against Crystal Palace on Monday 23rd October, with a 1pm kick-off at Selhurst Park.
