REPORT: Coventry City U23 1-2 Birmingham City U23 - Blues edge local Midlands derby at the Higgs Centre

20 March 2017

Second-half goals for the visitors ensure three points, with Tom Bayliss on target for City...

With the home side beginning the livelier, Devon Kelly-Evans was first to fashion an opening, roaming in behind the Birmingham City backline undetected.

The captain pulled the ball back for U18s striker Jordan Ponticelli, who hit the woodwork with his effort, before the ball rebounded to safety.

The Blues reacted with intent, as Olly McCoy advanced with pace, riding a series of challenges before Cian Harries stepped across to block a goalbound effort.

McCoy went close once again moments later, after a corner fell to the Blues winger, but his low drive fizzed past Corey Addai’s upright.

The away side were beginning to look dangerous on the break, as Wes McDonald dragged a shot wide, before George O’Neill fired an effort in to the side netting.

Jordan Shipley had a golden chance to put City in front on the stroke of half-time, but guided his unmarked header over the crossbar.

Four minutes after the restart, and the the Blues had taken the lead, with a simple short corner routine gifting McCoy the easiest of finishes. He lashed in from close range to give Blues the upper hand, before McDonald doubled the lead ten minutes later.

The lively David Popa had an effort well saved by Addai in the City net, but the parry fell fortuitously to McDonald who was able to give the away side some breathing space.

U18s skipper Tom Bayliss handed City a lifeline with 15 minutes remaining on the clock, as he broke from midfield and curled an effort in off the post, but the Sky Blues weren’t able to find further reply.
