The Sky Blues’ pre-season preparations have come to a close with a 2-1 win over Nuneaton Town in the Boro Tournament...
Jodi Jones’ spectacular effort late on gave Mark Robins’ side the victory at Liberty Way after Stuart Beavon opened the scoring early on.
“This is a new squad,” said Robins.
“Pre-season is all about learning your strengths and finding about what your attributes are and as these players play together more often they will grow a knowledge of each other’s game and hopefully the chances that come along will be converted.
“We have come through with a win but what is important now is what we do in the upcoming week ahead of Notts County.
“I think everyone is really looking forward to next week. Pre-season is gone now, it is next week that matters and there is a sense that this is what everyone has been waiting for.
“I expected a bit of tempo in yesterday’s game against Liverpool but we did not get it and today’s game was very similar to that, maybe because everyone’s thoughts are on next weekend.”
The Sky Blues have been quiet in front of goal throughout pre-season but the manager was delighted to see a more positive performance in front of goal this time out.
“There was a couple of really good goals here today.
“I thought Nuneaton’s goal was a great goal and I thought Jodi’s was a really good finish.
“Beavon has worked hard and has looked sharp up top. Today it felt like only a matter of time until Jordan Ponticelli was going to get on the score sheet. He was unlucky today, especially when he hit the bar, in fact he hit everything except the back of the net.
“He has certainly put himself in my thoughts without a shadow of a doubt so his performance was only good news to me,”
He added: “We have got some really good technical players here who are gifted in their finishing so those goals will come.”
