George Thomas is hoping last night’s Checkatrade Trophy victory can give the Sky Blues momentum in the league as they prepare to face Chesterfield on Saturday.

Alongside Ruben Lameiras and Ryan Haynes, the midfielder was on the scoresheet in what turned out to be a comfortable evening for Russell Slade's side.

Thomas admitted it is now important his teammates can replicate that kind of performance in the league. He said: “It was an enjoyable game to be part of. We passed it quite well at times and everybody got after it when out of possession, and it’s always nice to win by three goals.

“It was good to get a clean sheet as well, but you can feel as the game is going on the confidence is building within the lads.

“I think the team seems to be louder on the pitch which definitely helps. There is more organisation and more commanding voices within the dressing room. It helps us keep our shape and get the ball back quicker.”

Thomas scored his second senior goal of the season, after good play in the build up from both Jodi Jones and Stuart Beavon.

Since his arrival at the beginning of the month, Beavon has already been involved in numerous goals, including scoring on his debut, and the Welshman acknowledged the impact he has had.

“Stuart is a good player, he runs the channels well and it is never a lost cause. He is really good at holding the ball up and it is fantastic to play alongside him because he really does help the team.

“Jodi also did really well, getting another assist for a goal of mine. He does that really well and we understand each other, he recognised I was making that run to the front post and it was another good ball from him,”

He added: “It was nice to see Chris Stokes back on the pitch, I think it has been ten months since has been involved which must have been hard, but its pleasing to see him feature.”
