REPORT: Coventry City 1-3 Blackburn Rovers - Sky Blues defeated in Carabao Cup First Round

Duckens Nazon's first Sky Blues goal not enough as City exit the Carabao Cup.

The Sky Blues have exited the Carabao Cup after a 3-1 defeat to League One side Blackburn Rovers...

Duckens Nazon got himself on the scoresheet on his full-debut but his first-half goal was not enough to avoid defeat.

A volley from Corry Evans along with deflected goals from Richie Smallwood and former Coventry loan-star Dominic Samuel gave the away side victory and progression into the second round.

The first clear cut chance of the game fell on ten minutes. Jordan Shipley’s set-piece was curled brilliantly towards Maxime Biamou who rose highest in the area but his header was straight into the hands of David Raya in the Blackburn net.

It was however the visitors who opened the scoring. Evans chopped inside brilliantly before delicately placing a half-volley up and over Liam O’Brien into the far top corner.

Former Sky Blues favourite, Samuel got himself into some threatening areas moments later, forcing two good saves from O’Brien and making Blackburn appear all the more likely to increase their advantage.

Nevertheless, it would be Nazon, making his full debut for Coventry after joining on-loan from Wolves last week, who would draw the sides level. Jack Grimmer burst clear down the right-hand side and forced a good save from Raya but the Spaniard could only push it to Nazon who powered it home from close-range.

Nazon then came close to making it two goals in five minutes after getting the better of Derrick Williams at wing-back and charging forward into the area. His shot at goal pinballed around the six-yard box before somehow being hooked clear by Charlie Mulgrew.

Smallwood only joined Blackburn in the summer but made an instant impact just shy of the half-hour mark. The former Middlesbrough man fired an optimistic effort from range which, after a what looked like a deflection, found its way into the net. Despite their hard work the Sky Blues were once again behind.

The Sky Blues started the second-half strong, but Nazon was left to rue his missed chances yet again when Samuel appeared in the area to make it 3-1. This time the deflection was clear, as his close-range shot clipped the heel of Grimmer and nestled in the net.
