Nicky Eaden's Under-23s started their Development League campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory against Bolton at the Alan Higgs Centre.
After defeat in their opening game this time last season, Eaden was happy to kickstart this campaign in a positive manner.
"First game you're never sure what to expect. This time last season very few of the lads had ninety minutes under their belt and we've managed to not let that happen again." Eaden said.
"There was some decent play, it was a decent performance. It's quite a tough league for us this year. Most in the league are category two clubs in higher divisions in Championship or big League One teams.
Kwame Thomas scored the Sky Blues' goal on his first start for the club since returning from injury, and Eaden believes there will be chances for players such as Kwame to make an impression.
"Kwame is a handful, he is physical and works hard. He causes problems for the opposition and got a goal also. He missed a couple of chances beforehand, but he deserved it today for his work rate alone.
"The lads have got to be patient in terms of their progression to the first team. They have to take any chances they're given - Nothing will be handed on a plate and that competition is important,"
He added: "I think Mark Robins hasn't loaded his squad because we have some talented younger players who are pushing towards the first team. At the minute they might just have to be squad players, but the opportunity will be there."
