“You have to stay patient, but also work hard to ensure when you get the chance you can put it away." - Coventry City's Marvin Sordell

Striker Marvin Sordell on City's goalscoring troubles and the visit of Rochdale tomorrow afternoon...

Marvin Sordell has admitted that the strikers have to bare the burden for the lack of goals so far for the Sky Blues this season.

Despite a recent upturn in goalscoring form, City have scored the second least in League One, only ahead of Oldham Athletic.

However, Sordell was adamant that he and his teammates are not feeling any pressure ahead of the visit of Rochdale. He said: “It is our job as strikers to score goals, so all of the lads know what they need to.

“It’s quite simple really, we have to shoulder the responsibility because we are the players who are furthest forward and are expected to contribute with goals. We do that and we help the team win games.

“You have to stay patient, but you also have to work hard to ensure when you get the chance you can put it away. Sometimes you can overthink and work a bit too hard, but that’s the balance you need to find.”

Rochdale visit the Ricoh Arena this Saturday as City look for back-to-back home victories for the first time since the beginning of last season. Sordell is unsure of how Rochdale will approach the game.

“You can do all the preparation for the opposition, but you won’t truly know how they’re going to play until you kick-off. We’ve studied many teams who have changed their style compared to previous games.

“It’s one of them where you have to do all the preparation, but also focus on yourselves. They’ll be studying how they can stop us, and we’ll be looking at how to exploit their weaknesses,”

He added: “We’ll approach the game like every other. We look to play positive, attacking football, and if we play to the standard we set against Oxford then we will give ourselves the best chance.”
