“We seem to be coming together as a team and working hard for each other to improve the current situation." - Coventry City's Ruben Lameiras

Ruben Lameiras was delighted he could make a positive contribution to the Sky Blues’ Checkatrade Trophy victory against the Cobblers, sealing their progression to the next round.

The 21-year-old scored the third and final goal just moments after coming on, lobbing the ball superbly over goalkeeper David Cornell in the visitors goal.

Lameiras said: “Venus told me to enjoy myself out there and show what I can do. I had a little bit of freedom and I think that helped my game.

“McCann’s ball over the top was fantastic and I know nice times out of ten if I make that run he will be able to find me. It was a good feeling to get on the end of it and then finish.

“Apparently I’m the joint top scorer now so I’ll be sure to tell Marvin that, but overall it’s about the team performance and today we were excellent.”

Lameiras is hopeful that after a tough start to the season, the last two results can spark a good run of form for his side. The Portuguese forward now has three goals to his name this term, level with Sky Blues striker Marvin Sordell.

“When there is so many people come through the door it does take time to gel and know each others games. That’s no excuse because we should be doing better than what we have been.

“We seem to be coming together as a team now and working hard for each other to improve the current situation. Its two wins in a row now so it is something we can build on.”

He added: "We all know what football is like and how unforgiving it can be – we all don’t want to be where we currently are in the league now so we’re all doing what we can to try and improve that.”
