"They were pretty basic mistakes and if you give those sort of goals away you’ve got a problem." - Coventry City's Mark Venus

Mark Venus reflect's on a disappointing afternoon for the Sky Blues on the road...

Mark Venus lamented the basic defensive mistakes that cost his team during their defeat against Charlton Athletic.

The Sky Blues came away empty handed from the Valley, with Ricky Holmes, Ademola Lookman and Josh Magennis scoring for the home side.

Despite much of the game being a well-contested affair, basic errors at key moments frustrated Venus. He said: “I enjoyed the game and the way we played but I didn’t enjoy the goals we conceded.

“They were pretty basic mistakes and if you give those sort of goals away you’ve got a problem. The first goal we lost concentration and the second goal we got out-muscled in the corner and gave the ball away.

“We created enough opportunities to punish them, but struggled to take those chances. The final ball wasn’t quite there today and we were punished. No excuses.”

Venus admitted his side are struggling with the physical aspect of the league and must come to terms with that style of play if they are to move forward.

“It is proving a little difficult for us to master at the moment. We aren’t effective enough from crosses and need to find the right coloured shirt more often.

“But we have to bounce back, it’s all that we can do. We’ve got to dust ourselves down and go again on Tuesday night,”

He added: “We’ve got a couple of home games coming up and we have to try and make the most of them and get some points. We need to keep believing in what we’re doing and put the ball in the back of the net.”
