Defender Jordan Willis gave his assessment of the Sky Blues weekend performance, while highlighting the midfield trio as key to the win...
Jordan Willis believes the Sky Blues have put a marker down after their impressive 2-0 victory against Port Vale.
City earned their first three points of the season against the Valiants, and in doing so ended Vale’s 100% home record. The Sky Blues are the first side to take any points away from Vale Park this term, after suffering a 10-game winless run in the league.
Willis said: “The changing room is buzzing at the moment, we’ve had to wait for this feeling longer than we wanted but it’s great to get a win.
“I think we have shown today what we’re capable of. Port Vale are a very good side and have started the season off fantastically, especially at Vale Park, so it was a great win for us.
“We need to keep this kind of performance going forward and not let it slip. We’ve got the first win of the season so now we’ll push on and try to build on this.”
Whilst the defender was happy to record his fourth clean sheet of the season, he believes the win was testament to the dominance of the midfield trio of Ben Stevenson, Chris McCann and Gael Bigirimana.
“I thought our midfield three were outstanding today. They controlled the game, kept the ball and contributed to both attack and defence.
“The shape we played today really left 3v3 in the middle so the midfield battle was always key, and I think we came out on top today in that aspect, which of course helps massively."
He added: “The message was simple before the game, we have to win today and we had to perform well to do that. It’s a very good feeling to put a performance like that together and come away with three points.”
