Mark Venus oversees a deserved Sky Blues win, as he takes charge of the club for the first time...
Mark Venus praised his side as they earned their first three points of the season with a 2-0 victory against high-flying Port Vale.
Goals from Marvin Sordell and Chris McCann, the midfielder's first for the club, ended Vale’s perfect home record and gave Venus a win in his first match at the helm.
Venus was particularly impressed with the team’s high energy and work rate, something that was highlighted in the week on the training ground. “I thought we were very good today across the whole pitch. The energy the lads shown was fantastic and we fully deserved the win today," Venus said.
“We’ve been working on shape and when to press for the last few days and I think they executed that very well considering we haven’t had much time together after a hectic few days.
“My message to them was to keep focused and continue doing what they have been doing, because in parts it has been very good. Today we added what had been missing previously.
Venus admitted that whilst it was a relief to get that first victory under the belt, there is a great deal more work to do to climb the League One table.
“It is vital we build on this and continue to work hard. We have to approach training and preparation in the same way we have been doing and see where it takes us.
“They need to take a bit of confidence from this, because we’ve faced a very good side who have started the season fantastically, specifically here at Vale Park.”
He added: “We maintained our performance throughout the 90 minutes, something that we have struggled to do so far this season. The next step is to maintain positive results and we’ll do everything we can to do that.”
