Mark Venus on this Saturday's opponents for their SkyBet League One clash, as City prepare to travel south...
Mark Venus believes the current squad is better than the league table suggests heading into the weekend's league tie with London-based Charlton.
The Sky Blues currently sit in 24th place - albeit with a game in hand - having been afforded a rest over the international break. Venus' side come in to the game off the back of a comfortable victory away to Port Vale and will be looking to build on that against the ex-Championship side.
He said: “I firmly believe this squad is good enough and the last two games gave us some real positives. We understand it is only two games, and only one league game, but we have to remain positive.
“We need to keep picking up points and climb the table because nothing else will suffice. Our initial aim is to climb out the bottom four and then we’ll look further ahead.
“It is important not to get ahead of ourselves and focus only on the next opposition, and this is Charlton tomorrow. If you look at the table there is a lot of teams around a similar points total so things can change quickly.”
Charlton enter the tie just three points ahead of the visitors, as the Sky Blues have the chance to jump out of the drop zone with a win. Mark added: “It’s a very competitive league this season with a lot of teams very close to each other. Of course, that makes each game difficult and means there are no easy games.
“I think Charlton have found that out coming down a division, it is not easy to bounce straight back. They have invested a bit of money in the team and I’ve been watching them a lot recently."
"I believe them to be better than where they’re currently sat in the table. They have some very good individuals who can punish you if you don’t do your job properly, so it’s important we prepare right.”
