“You don’t get many opportunities to score a hat-trick in the FA Cup, but I’m pleased with the two.” - Coventry City’s Marvin Sordell

City secure a second round tie, as Marvin Sordell inspires a comeback win in the FA Cup...

City striker Marvin Sordell scored his first brace in Sky Blue colours as City overcame FA Cup first round opponents Morecambe at the second time of asking.

Having gone 1-0 down early on, Sordell scored either side of the break to ensure City’s safe passage to the second round where they face the winner of the Cambridge United/Dover Athletic tie.

The goal takes Sordell’s tally to six goals for the season, while the striker was disappointed he couldn’t take the opportunity to notch a hat-trick.

He said: “We got through which was the important thing but we’re disappointed with our performance really. Coming off the back of Saturday, where our performance levels were high, we’re disappointed with that standard.

“We didn’t start well, we were slow and on top of that they scored a goal so we’re on the back foot.

“Again, I’m slightly disappointed as I thought I could have had a hat-trick. You don’t get many opportunities to score a hat-trick in the FA Cup, but I’m pleased with the two.”

City will now travel to League Two outfit Cambridge United, or Conference side Dover Athletic in the competition’s second round, having progressed past the first stage for the first time in the past three seasons.

Sordell added: “The last few years of my career I haven’t played much football, so I’m just happy to be on the pitch. I want to be playing football and enjoying it.

“The main job of a no.9 position is to score goals, but I just want to be contributing to the team. Scoring goals, creating goals, or whatever is needed.

“We still want to be climbing the league table, the first ten games set us back. We need to start winning games and be where we should be.”
