"We perhaps lost our way a little at times today and struggled to control the game like we usually do." - Coventry City's Mark Venus

Mark Venus reflect's on the Sky Blues' 1-1 draw against Morecambe in the FA Cup...

Mark Venus admitted a draw was a fair result as the Sky Blues were held in the FA Cup against Morecambe at the Globe Arena.

In a hard-fought contest, Jamie Sterry scored his first professional goal to cancel out Dean Winnard's opening goal and earn City a replay at the Ricoh Arena.

Although Venus expected a better performance, particularly in the first-half, he was happy his side are still in the competition ahead of tomorrow’s second round draw. He said: “We didn’t create much in the first half and they certainly had the better of the chances.

“I think we played with a bit more purpose and intensity in the second half and created a lot more. We perhaps deserved to score more than just the single goal but that’s the way it goes.

“Even after our improvement in the second half they could have scored a couple themselves, particularly towards the end when they had a couple of good chances. Overall, it was a fair result.”

After a frantic opening 20 minutes, the Sky Blues seemed to settle into the fixture and Venus believes his side need to play their own game and not get dragged into the opposition’s style of play moving forward.

“We perhaps lost our way a little at times today and struggled to control the game like we usually do. If we are defeated playing the way we want to play it’s easier to take.

“I didn’t feel in the first half we played how we’re trying to play and that helped Morecambe grow into the game,”

He added: “We certainly didn’t threaten their goal enough. I thought Lee Burge and the whole defence did really well today. I know where we are as a football team, we just have to keep on working to improve.”
