Thursday 19th May 1977: Both the Sky Blues and Bristol City needed a result to stay up in the final fixture to be held at Highfield Road of the 1976/77 season.
City swept in to a two goal lead courtesy of goals from Tommy Hutchison, but the West Country side levelled through Gerry Gow and Don Gillies with 11 minutes remaining.
With both in danger of dropping out of the old Division One, tensions were running high. But once news came through that their relegation rivals Sunderland were losing – via a message displayed on the Coventry scoreboard – the match was played out as a mutually beneficial draw.
The game finished 2-2, as both teams escaped the the costly drop to Division Two.
