NEWS: Former Sky Blues midfielder Ian Gibson has passed away aged 73

25 May 2016

Coventry City FC would like to extend condolences to the family of Ian Gibson who has sadly passed away today...

Everyone at Coventry City FC is saddened to hear of the passing of former Sky Blues midfielder Ian Gibson, at the age of 73.

Gibson made 104 appearances for City, scoring 14 goals between 1966 and 1970, and was part of the side to win promotion to the First division in his first season at the club.

Gibson made over 100 appearances under the late Jimmy Hill in the 60s, but made a real name for himself under Noel Cantwell as he helped the club qualify for Europe in 1969-70 by virtue of finishing sixth in the First Division.

'Gibbo' as he was nicknamed, was a firm fan favourite and also a part of the Coventry City Former Players Association. A full obituary of the ex-Coventry midfielder will follow.

Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.
