“It’s good for the players to sweat and work hard together as a team.” - Coventry City’s Tony Mowbray

12 July 2016

Mowbray is expecting to add more players to the ranks over the next few weeks as pre-season training in Austria gets underway...

The Sky Blues manager was out with the squad this morning, as City embarked upon their first pre-season session in Austria.

With temperatures reaching above 30 degrees, the squad were put through their paces in fitness and conditioning drills this morning, ahead of a tactical session this afternoon.

Mowbray said: “It’s what we expected, the training pitches and facilities are nice. We started at 9am this morning and as you can feel now it’s pretty warm.

“It’s good for the players to sweat and work hard together as a team. This morning’s session was fitness focussed, rather than football work. Team shape and organisation will be this afternoon’s session.

“We’ve got lots of work to do in possession, out of possession, working on transitions. I’ve told the group that there will be more bodies being added over the coming weeks, so it’s for the core of the group to understand the foundations of the team for this year.

“We’ll try and get everyone a game at the end of the week, we’ve got some work to do on team shape which we’ll try and instil on Saturday.”

Speaking about the need to make additions to the squad, Mowbray believes the club have already made two astute acquisitions, and will be looking to add to those over coming weeks.

He commented: “We’re working hard on the phone, Mark [Venus] especially to try and pull things together. We’ve got some meetings set up for early next week, with the hope of making signings.

“There will be competition for places next year, you need a set of strong players behind your starting XI. Football is a squad game and we’re looking to build the strongest squad possible going in to this season. The task is finding the right players, the ones that will buy in to the ethos of football at this club.”
