PREVIEW: Southend United v Coventry City - The Sky Blues return to League One action with a trip to Roots Hall

9 December 2016

We reveal our head-to-head record against the Shrimpers, while looking at the current betting odds in our matchday preview...

The Sky Blues return to League One action as they travel to Roots Hall to face an in-form Southend United side tomorrow afternoon.

The Shrimpers lie in tenth position in the League standings and are currently on a run of eight games unbeaten under Phil Brown’s stewardship.

During that run, Southend have picked up impressive wins against the likes of Bradford, Bury and MK Dons; but how do they compare against the Sky Blues in recent seasons?

Head-to-Head

City’s 3-0 defeat at Roots Hall in the last meeting between the two sides was the Shrimpers’ first victory over the Sky Blues in 50+ years.

With only four Football League meetings between the pair since 1964, City hold the (albeit minimal) bragging rights. Take a look at the last five fixtures below:

23rd January 2016: League One
Southend United 3-0 Coventry City

31st August 2015: League One
Coventry City 2-2 Southend United

30th December 2006: League Championship
Coventry City 1-1 Southend United

13th October 2006: League Championship
Southend United 2-3 Coventry City

22nd September 1998: League Cup
Southend United 0-4 Coventry City

If those fixtures are anything to go by, expect goals tomorrow afternoon!

Fancy a Flutter?

If you would like to place a bet ahead of the Sky Blues’ trip down south, City are currently the 21/10 underdogs for the fixture with SkyBet.

Southend can be backed as 13/10 favourites, with the draw available at 23/10.

City’s biggest victory over Southend in their last five meetings came in 1998, with Dion Dublin, George Boateng, Noel Whelan and Trond Egil Soltvedt getting on the scoresheet in a 4-0 victory.

If the Sky Blues were to replicate that day, you can back the correct four-nil scoreline at a huge 80/1.

Do you think you have what it takes to predict the first goalscorer? Here are some selections:

Simon Cox 5/1
Ryan Leonard 12/1
Marvin Sordell 6/1
Andy Rose 10/1

HOT-TIP: Over 2.5 goals - 10/11
