ON THIS DAY: Monday 29th December 1997 - Press react to Huckerby heroics at Highfield Road

29 December 2016

Huckerby's dramatic late winner lives long in the memories of Sky Blue supporters...

Coventry City made the morning headlines after a thrilling comeback victory against Manchester United at Highfield Road in 1997.

On Sunday 28th December 1997, the Sky Blues were trailing 2-1 with just four minutes remaining. Darren Huckerby's twisting run resulted in a penalty kick, which was dispatched by Dion Dublin, before Huckerby scored what would turn out to be the Goal of the Month.

The forward slalomed through the United defence to slot the ball home and complete a famous turnaround.

Huckerby was elated as he spoke to the Daily Mirror: "I guess you would have to say that's the best goal I've ever scored. I don't remember much about it, apart from the impression of leaving a string of United bodies behind me. I never saw their faces."
