NEWS: Sky Blues in the Community BTEC Football Academy Kicks Off

10 August 2016

Play football alongside your studies with the Sky Blues in the Community BTEC Academy...

The start of Sky Blues in the Community’s new Football Academy BTEC partnership with Warwickshire College is now only a month away and any students who are not yet signed up to a college course are still able to apply.

The partnership between Sky Blues in the Community and Warwickshire College Group will see academy students study full-time for two years to gain a BTEC qualification (Levels 2 or 3) in Sport and Active Recreation, whilst getting additional coaching and exposure to the world of professional football.

As part of the education programme, students will be given the opportunity to gain valuable sports industry experience with Sky Blues in the Community coaching at schools, holiday courses and other community-based activities across Coventry and Warwickshire. Students will also be given the opportunity to gain a nationally recognised Sports Coach UK Sports Leaders Award and an FA Level One coaching badge as part of the Academy.

On the footballing side, players will benefit from a weekly coaching and fixtures programme overseen by former Coventry City and Wales midfielder and UEFA A Licence coach David Phillips. The Academy will represent Coventry City in the Midlands/North division of the Under 19 National Youth Development League. The league – which is affiliated to British Universities and Colleges Sport – is only open to professional football club college programmes, with 24 clubs including Birmingham City, Bournemouth, Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Burnley and Blackpool playing across the four divisions.

Away fixtures regularly take place at the professional club academy or first team training facilities, with home games being played at the Moreton Morrell College, which is benefiting from a significant investment and refurbishment programme of the sports facilities over the coming months.

Whilst the course is open to anyone, it does represent a fantastic opportunity for 16-19 year olds in Leamington, Warwick, Kenilworth, Stratford and the surrounding areas.

Training sessions for the Academy take place on Monday 15th August and Friday 26th August, with both sessions taking place from 2-4pm at Moreton Morrell campus. Students who are not yet enrolled on the course are able to attend the training by contacting James Woodhouse on 024 7678 6349.

College enrolment takes place on Wednesday August 31st at Moreton Morrell College. Students who have not yet signed up to the course are required to express their interest either by visiting the Warwickshire College website (www.warwickshire.ac.uk) or emailing james.woodhouse@ccfc.co.uk
