SBITC: New literacy based workshop Premier League Reading Stars launched!

23 October 2015

The project is designed to stimulate children aged 9-13 years old who love football, to encourage reading...

Sky Blues in the Community are delighted to announce a fantastic new literacy based workshop aimed at Years 5, 6, 7 and 8.

Premier League Reading Stars (PLRS), as it is known, is based around a partnership with the Premier League and The National Literacy Trust.  The exciting project is designed to stimulate children aged 9-13 years who love football but lack motivation to engage with and achieve in literacy.

Premier League Reading Stars builds on evidence that footballers can influence the way young people view reading, particularly among boys and those on free school meals. The course takes place over 10 specially designed hour long lessons, each containing a different theme and different ways to engage the learners with reading. The Premier League have provided video links with world class footballers, who describe their own favourite books and the importance behind reading, something that will engage even the hardest to reach readers.

Over the 10 weeks, the learners will read from different books, chart their own progress using a specially designed sticker album as well as using an online platform to further their experience and understanding.

Over the past three years, thousands of children have used Premier League Reading Stars to raise their attainment. In 2014, 3 out of 4 children made at least 6 months’ progress in reading in just 10 weeks; 1 child in 3 made a year’s progress, or more. More positive impact stories can be found here: http://www.literacytrust.org.uk/premier_league_reading_stars/impact

Sky Blues in the Community will provide a staff member with PLRS training for 10 weeks in schools wishing to buy in the programme. Working with the community team brings with it its own benefits; at the end of each course, the learners will be invited to attend a game at the Ricoh Arena and have their photo taken pitch side during the half time interval. A number of schools will also receive a visit by a Sky Blues player, where they will attend an afternoon session at the school to talk about the importance of reading and fielding questions from participants.
