"It was a top performance and we've got to use that as our benchmark." - Coventry City's Tony Mowbray

The City boss also hopes to see the same levels of performance when the Sky Blues travel to Bradford on Tuesday...

Coventry City manager Tony Mowbray stressed the importance of preparation following the 4-1 win over Gillingham.

Jacob Murphy scored a first-half hat-trick and Ben Turner's header had the Sky Blues 4-0 up at the break in the top of the table clash.

Bradley Dack netted a consolation for the Gills as the Sky Blues match their best ever start to a season with another three points.

However, Mowbray is keeping calm after the result and hopes to see his side repeat the performance against Bradford on Tuesday night.

The City boss said: "I've been top of the table many times, at Boro I was top of the table two years running and finished outside the play-offs.

"There is still a really long way to go. Let's just keep working hard and making sure we continue to improve with every game. It's important to keep that mind-set.

"We've got another tough game coming up on Tuesday against a tough Bradford side who are keeping plenty of clean sheets at the moment so we need a repeat performance.

"It's important the players and staff enjoy these moments though and it was a great performance. Gillingham were top of the league at the start of the day so to perform so well against them is a great achievement."

Jacob Murphy's hat-trick came in a crazy ten-minute spell and Mowbray was pleased with the intensity his side performed to.

He added: "What I was pleased about was the concentration and the intensity we played at, it's what we've been working on all week leading up to the game and it paid off.

"It was a good week for us. We've been able to get a full week's preparation in and do a lot of work on the grass on the opposition. They were prepared for the challenge and it showed.

"I thought right from the first whistle we looked like the team who were going to win the game and when we scored the first goal, we didn't let them recover and kept pressing forward.

"Overall, it was a top performance and we've got to use that as our benchmark for the rest of the season."
