Coventry City secured their first win under manager Tony Mowbray with a 3-2 victoery over Chesterfield at the Proact Stadium.

Marcus Tudgay gave City the lead before Jay O'Shea equalised, but second-half goals from substitute Sanmi Odelusi and Frank Nouble were enough to hand City three points despite a late reply from Gboly Ariybi.

The Sky Blues opened the scoring after eight minutes, when Jordan Willis picked the ball up midway in the Chesterfield half and put in a brilliant cross which Tudgay headed expertly into the far corner from the back-post.

The hosts were almost level shortly after when Caolan Lavery hit a shot from 20-yards which almost went under Lee Burge but the stopper diverted the ball wide.

City were dangerous on the break though and debutant Grant Ward almost had a goal in unusual circumstances when his corner from the left was tipped onto the bar by keeper Tommy Lee.

But the Spireites had the equaliser on 42 minutes when O'Shea hit an effort from 20-yards which took a massive deflection to help find the right corner just past Burge's dive.

The hosts started the second-half brightly and were denied a second when Burge made a brilliant save from Lavery, as he got a fingertip to a vicious effort which looked destined for the bottom corner inside the area.

But Mowbray brought on Odelusi for Dominic Samuel and the change worked when the winger netted just eight minutes after coming on. Ward picked the ball up inside the area and hit an effort which found its way to Odelusi at the back-post for a tap-in.

City had to dig in for a period but got the third when Nouble harried Spireites defender Ian Evatt and nicked the ball on the half-way with the striker finding himself clean through. He kept his composure whilst surging on the Chesterfield goal and calmly found the bottom right hand corner just inside the area.

The home side made it a grandstand finish with seven minutes to go when substitute Ariybi found space at the back post and fired an effort into the bottom left corner.

But City held on for their first win in three games and their first win under manager Mowbray.
