MATCH REPORT: Luton Town 1-1 Coventry City - James Maddison scores in draw at Kenilworth Road

25 July 2015

Late leveller cancels out James Maddison's opener for the Sky Blues...

James Maddison's goal wasn't enough to give Coventry City a deserved victory in the 1-1 draw away to with Luton Town.

The 18-year old netted just after the half-time break, but the League Two side replied with just three minutes remaining to earn a draw at Kenilworth Road.

The first-half was a half of few chances, as City were in control of the tempo of the game against the League Two side.

Just before the 15 minute mark, Aaron Phillips got in behind the Hatters defence on the right hand side and his dangerous cross was narrowly missed by everyone in the penalty area.

City didn't open the game up, but after a good period of possession around the Luton penalty area, Ryan Haynes bombed forward and hit a shot from just inside the area which keeper Elliot Justham had to tip over.

The Sky Blues came out unchanged for the second-half and it reaped its rewards within three minutes when Maddison opened the scoring.

Danny Swanson and Lameiras combined excellently on the left-hand side with some great interplay, which allowed the Scot to cut inside and have a shot which was spilled by Elliot Justham. Maddison reacted the sharpest to tap in from six-yards.

Luton were almost level moments after though, as Craig Mackail-Smith crossed for former City loanee Josh McQuoid but the striker miscued at the back-post.

City then brought on Academy graduates George Thomas and Devon Kelly-Evans for Lameiras and Jim O'Brien and Thomas had a good chance almost instantly after coming on. Maddison fed the striker in with a wonderful pass, Thomas opted for an early effort from outside the area which went straight at the 'keeper.

Dion Kelly-Evans then came on for Swanson with nine minutes to play and the Hatters were level with just three minutes to play. Substitute Jack Marriott created some space for himself in the area and hit an effort into the left hand corner.

That was the last real action of the game and Tony Mowbray's men continue their pre-season schedule away to Cambridge United on Tuesday night.
