MATCH REPORT: Cambridge United 1-0 Coventry City - Leon Legge nets first-half header to condemn City to defeat

28 July 2015

Another stern pre-season test for Tony Mowbray's side at the Abbey Stadium...

Coventry City continued their pre-season preperations with a 1-0 defeat to Cambridge United.

The League Two side scored the only goal of the game ten minutes before half-time as City were put through their paces in another tough pre-season test.

The Sky Blues did start the brighter however and had a good sustained period of early pressure, with Ruben Lameiras cutting inside and hitting a shot which was well saved by Sam Beasant after just two minutes.

Dave Beasant's son was beaten on 21 minutes but the linesman ruled it out for offside - the 'goal' stemmed from some wonderful City possession and Lameiras threaded a lovely ball through to James Maddison but he elected to pass instead of shoot. From the resulting corner, Marcus Tudgay got a touch and diverted it into the net but the linesman waved his flag early.

The linesman on the other side was called into action himself shortly after, when Cambridge had the ball in the net themselves, but Barry Corr's controlled finish from eight-yards was chalked off as the fourth official left it late, but raised his flag.

Cambridge did have the opener though on 35 minutes, when Leon Legge was allowed to power in a header from a corner from eight-yards.

At the half-time break, City brought on Jim O'Brien and George Thomas for Danny Swanson and Marcus Tudgay as the Sky Blues deployed a false-nine tactic.

O'Brien should have drawn City level on 67 minutes as John Fleck played a wonderful quarterback-esque pass from deep and the winger steamed on to it, surged into the area but went for the chip from eight-yards with what looked a certain goal.

From that the Sky Blues began to move it nicely again, but Romain Vincelot did pick up a yellow card for dissent.

Dion Kelly-Evans then came on for Jordan Willis for the final ten minutes, but Lee Burge made two smart saves from Jordan Chiedoze and Jordan Slew to keep it at 1-0.

Thomas then had a great chance as Lameiras released him in the area, but he hit a left-footed effort narrowly wide.

That was the final action in another stern pre-season workout for Tony Mowbray's men and our final pre-season game will be at Nuneaton against Oxford United on Saturday.
