MATCH REPORT: Coventry City U18s 1-0 Birmingham City U18s - Trialist scores as City claim narrow home victory

14 February 2015

An impressive debut from Darragh Leahy helps Jason Farndon's Sky Blues side claim a narrowly victory at home...

Coventry City Under-18s recorded an impressive home victory against high-flying Birmingham City at the Alan Higgs Centre.

The Sky Blues welcomed the return of Jay Albini and Kyle Spence who have recently suffered from injury and Darragh Leahy made his first appearance for City after receiving international clearance.

The home side dominated the vast majority of the first-half as midfielders Jordan Shipley and Callum Maycock controlled much of the play.

Spence fired wide in the 9th minute and Harries should have put the Sky Blues ahead in the 22nd minute when his goal-bound header was cleared off the line from a Maycock free-kick.

City only had to wait three more minutes to go ahead however, when the trialist closed the keeper down and caught him in possession to score the only goal of the game.

Jason Farndon's side should have doubled their lead just after the half-hour mark when another set-piece caused havoc in the Birmingham penalty area and Luke Bromley and Kyle Barnett had headers cleared off the line.

The second-half was a different story. Birmingham dominated much of the play but struggled to make any clear-cut chances against the defensively solid City.

Harries and Barnett led from the back brilliantly as the returning Bromley had an impressive game at right-back and Leahy enjoyed a solid debut.

Bassala Sambou and George Thomas were introduced late on and City looked like they would stretch their lead on the break but couldn't get the final touch as the Sky Blues stay in touch of top spot in the league.
