Coventry City Football Club will use Saturday’s match with MK Dons to promote a campaign to encourage those aged between 40 and 74 to get their free NHS health-check.
The club is working with Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust and Coventry City Council to promote the scheme and encourage those that are eligible to take advantage of the free service.
The 30-minute check is part of the national NHS Health Check programme which aims to keep people well for longer by picking up on a number of common health problems or potential risks early.
Former players Dave Bennett and Dietmar Bruck are fronting the campaign for the Sky Blues and they will be checking that they’re ‘match fit’ by taking advantage of the Health Checks themselves.
Tynan Scope, corporate sales manager for Coventry City Football Club, said: “We are delighted to be promoting this campaign and there will be details available at the match on Saturday.
“It’s a very positive campaign to get over-40s to take advantage of the Health Checks that could, ultimately, be a life-saver.”
Councillor Alison Gingell, Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Services, added: “I am delighted that we are working with Coventry City Football club to promote NHS Health Checks to their supporters.
“The free check assesses an individual’s risk of developing conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, stroke and some forms of dementia. The good news is that these conditions can often be prevented, even if there is a history of them in the family.”
All adults aged between 40 and 74 who have not had a Health Check in the last five years are eligible for the scheme and can get a check at their GP surgery or at one of several community venues across the city.
Veronica Ford, Associate Director of Operations, Community Health and Wellbeing Services at Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust, said: “Raising awareness and highlighting the benefits of free NHS Health Checks among Coventry City Football Club’s supporters is a great way of encouraging people to undergo a free health MOT.
“Reducing the risk of developing certain health conditions can be achieved through making adjustments to the way we live our lives, such as cutting down on alcohol, quitting smoking or increasing physical activity.
