Finham Primary School overcame Whitmore Park Primary School in the final of the Coventry City Kids Cup competition at the Ricoh Arena on Saturday.
The Kids Cup – overseen by the Football League and sponsored by Kinder, is an annual competition that sees primary schools in Coventry and Warwickshire compete in a local competition, before the winners go on to represent Coventry City in a regional finals.
This year a record 46 teams entered the competition with over 320 pupils taking part. The tournament was run over two days with Whitmore Park taking on Whoberley Hall in the first semi-final and Finham facing Mount Nod in the other semi-final.
Finham and Whitmore Park came out victors in their respective games and the two sides met at the Ricoh Arena prior to Saturday’s home fixture against Oldham Athletic.
Both teams played their part in an even and competitive game closely watch by Sky Blues legendary goalkeeper Steve Orgrizovic, with Finham running out victors by one goal to nil. The boys day didn’t finish there, as they came together to form the guard of honour for the Sky Blues and Oldham players as they emerged from the tunnel before kick-off, then taking their place as ball boys for the League One fixture.
Finham will now go on to the regional finals, which are being hosted by Swindon Town, and will see them playing for the Sky Blues against schools representing other teams including Millwall, Peteborough, Gillinham and Walsall.
The winners of the two regional events will go on to the national final at Wembley Stadium, which will take place on the pitch before the Sky Bet League One play-off final in May.
