Adam Armstrong hit a debut brace to fire Coventry City to a 2-0 opening day victory against Wigan Athletic at the Ricoh Arena.

The 18-year old Newcastle loanee netted a goal in each half as the Sky Blues put in an excellent shift against the League One favourites.

The Sky Blues had the opener on 14 minutes, when Jim O'Brien did superbly to nick the ball back in the middle of the pitch and he then played a superb ball through to the onrushing Armstrong who kept his composure to neatly finish into the corner just inside the area.

Just two minutes later, Lee Burge had to be alert to keep out Will Grigg, who hit an effort at the back-post but the keeper did well to save.

Wigan did grow into the game and began to zip the ball around, but the Sky Blues kept their discipline and composure right up to the half-time whistle.

Aaron Phillips then came on for Jordan Willis at half-time and City had two good chances within ten minutes of the whistle, when Chris Stokes hit one narrowly wide from 20-yards before Ruben Lameiras went through one-on-one only but he tried to take it round the keeper and his dribble was well saved.

But the second came on 62 minutes when a great City press saw the ball bounce to John Fleck on the left and his brilliant low cross was diverted in by Armstrong from five-yards.

The Newcastle loanee then almost had a sensational debut hat-trick as he lashed an effort from 20-yards which rattled the left-hand post.

Bryn Morris then came on for his City debut for Lameiras and O’Brien hobbled off to be replaced by George Thomas.

Wigan didn't really threaten in the final exchanges and James Maddison almost got the Sky Blues a third, when he curled a right-footed beauty from the edge of the box against the right post.

But City can look forward to the cup game against Rochdale with a win on the opening day of the season under their belt.
