HEAD-TO-HEAD: Coventry City vs Wigan Athletic - We look at some of the previous meetings between the two sides

6 August 2015

Ahead of the season opener, we look at the head-to-head record between the two sides...

Coventry City have only ever played Wigan Athletic six times as we head into the season opener at the Ricoh Arena.

Saturday's game will be Athletic's first ever trip to the Ricoh Arena, as the last time the pair met was in 2005.

In that game, the Latics, who went on to finish second in the Championship, beat City 2-1 at Highfield Road.

Gary McSheffrey's goal sandwiched strikes from Gary Teale and Nathan Ellington. The corresponding game that campaign was a 4-1 defeat, with Eddie Johnson netting City's only goal.

There have only ever been four meetings in the league between the pair, with Wigan winning three of those and the other being a draw, all between 2003 and 2005.

The Sky Blues' only win in this fixture was in the FA Cup in 1991, when Micky Gynn netted the winner at Springfield Park. Let's hope City can add to that victory on Saturday!
