Jordan Shipley's second-half penalty wins the game as three Under-16s feature in preparation for next season....

Coventry City Under-18s picked up an important midweek win at Barnsley thanks to Jordan Shipley's second-half penalty.

Devon Kelly-Evans, Kyle Spence and Ben Stevenson all started for Jason Farndon's side at Barnsley who were looking to reclaim third spot in the league from Birmingham City.

City Under-16s Dan Smith and Reece Ford all started for the Sky Blues who almost went ahead through the long range efforts of Kyle Spence and Ben Stevenson in the first-half.

The Sky Blues, who dominated throughout, took the lead with just under 30 minutes remaining when the impressive Jacob Whitmore was fouled in the area and Shipley stepped up to slot it home.

Team

Coventry City U18s: Richards (GK), Ford, Barnett, Leahy, Whitmore, De. Kelly-Evans, Maycock, Stevenson (Bayliss 70), Spence, Shipley, Smith (Albini 70).

Subs not used: Addai, Camwell, Finn.

City Under-18s coach Jason Farndon said: "We played really well and I was really happy with the performance.

"We had two Under-16s start today and brought on Tom Bayliss who is also an Under-16, and they all did really well which is encouraging for next year.

"We were on our knees at times as a lot of players had to do a coaching course yesterday as part of their education but they kept going and rose to the task.

"The 3-5-2 system isn't preferred but it seems to work and special credit has to go to Jacob Whitmore who was outstanding today. He not only won the penalty but never stopped throughout the game and I'd love to read his GPS stats as I'm sure they'd be extremely high."
