Sky Blues book a place in the second round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy courtesy of Josh McQuoid's winner
Coventry City booked themselves a place in the second round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy after a young Sky Blues side saw off League Two Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park thanks to Josh McQuoid's solitary winner.
The striker grabbed the only goal of the game six minutes after the hour in a tight encounter with the Chairboys which made it three for the season and his second goal in as many games.
Boss Steven Pressley made seven of changes to the side that drew 1-1 with Swindon Town at the County Ground as the Sky Blues kicked off their Johnstone's Paint Trophy campaign.
Lee Burge, Danny Pugh, Conor Thomas, Danny Swanson, Billy Daniels, Jordan Clarke and Jack Finch all returned alongside Mohamed Coulibaly who made his comeptitive debut in a City side where 11 of the 16-man squad comprised of Academy products.
A fairly disjointed first 15 minutes saw both sides try and settle themselves into the game although there was very little in the way of goalmouth action until Matt McClure went close after quarter of an hour.
Aaron Holloway picked out the striker with a lifted through ball but as McClure bore down on goal he could only place his finish wide of the far post from an acute angle eight yards out.
City first real chance came out of nowhere though after 28 minutes when Burge's throw through the heart of the midfield picked out Swanson to play a cheeky through ball to Coulibaly who stabbed a finsih past Matt Ingram but watched as Stuart Lewis slid to clear the ball of the line.
Max Kretzschmar then forced a good low save out of Burge on 34 minutes when he played a one-two with McClure 20 yards out and pulled the trigger, the City 'keeper sprawling to his right to keep the effort out.
City then went close again two minutes before the break when Swanson floated a lovely measured ball over the top for McQuoid who took a touch and turned his man before shooting from the edge of the area and clipping Wycombe's crossbar.
McQuoid made no mistake with the opener six minutes after the hour though to finish of a superb flowing move from the Sky Blues which ended with Danny Pugh's sweeping low cross into the box for the striker to smash home first time from eight yards out.
The hosts were a whisker away from a leveller five minutes later when a fortunate ball fell into the path of Lewis who swung a boot it but pulled his effort across the face of goal and wide.
The Sky Blues then required a superb reflex save from Burge with 15 minutes to go when a corner delivery picked out Aaron Pierre to power a goalbound header which the City shot stopper flicked onto the bar.
Two second half changes by Pressley then tasked the Sky Blues with seeing out the final ten minutes of the game with nine of the 11 players on the pitch having come from the club's Academy.
That's just what they did despite some late rallying from the home side as they resisted a push from Wycombe to secure a place in the second round of the JPT.
