The Sky Blues are through to the second round of the FA Youth Cup thanks to a dominant performance at Nuneaton Town's Liberty Way stadium....

Coventry City progressed to the second round of the FA Youth Cup with a comfortable 3-0 win over Peterborough Northern Star.

A brace from James Maddison and a goal from Kyle Spence gave the Sky Blues comfortable passage against the college outfit at Nuneaton Town’s home stadium Liberty Way.

The Sky Blues controlled the game from the off and their first chance came on 12 minutes, when Kyle Barnett’s header from Ben Stevenson’s corner was cleared off the line.

The Sky Blues should have been given a penalty shortly after when Maddison was chopped down in the area but the referee bizarrely gave a free-kick, which came to nothing.

City were relentless and finally made their first-half dominance pay, when Maddison scored his first of the night with a curling effort from just inside the area which squirmed its way in at the near post past the dive of Aaron Dunham.

City doubled their lead just three minutes into the second-half when after a clever touch on the edge of the box from Maddison drew a foul to which the captain for the night stepped up to fire a low effort into the right corner.

Ten minutes later, City had the third their play merited, after clever play from Spence on the left saw him cut inside and play a neat one-two with George Thomas, which resulted in him tapping in from six-yards out.

Maddison was then replaced by Bassala Sambou on 59 minutes, and with the game settling down Cian Harries also made way for Luke Bromley while Dan Smith came on for the hard-working Thomas.

The Sky Blues were comfortable but the performance was blemished when they finished the game with ten-men – the influential Stevenson taken off on a stretcher after a poor challenge from Northern Star defender Joe Bull.

Smith could have added a fourth but he headed Jake Whitmore’s cross wide, but the win sees the under-18’s progress to the next round where they will face either Nantwich Town or Rochdale.
