MATCH REPORT: Coventry City 0 - 1 Notts County - City defeated by in-form County

15 November 2014

The Sky Blues fall to a Gary Thompson strike and have late penalty appeal waved away...

Coventry City failed to make it back-to-back wins as they were beaten 1-0 by Notts County at the Ricoh Arena.

Gary Thompson's strike gave the visitors three points as the Sky Blues couldn't make it three league games unbeaten.

Steven Pressley's side started with two changes from the midweek victory over Plymouth and were forced to make a substitution after 23 minutes, when Jordan Willis then pulled up with what looked like a hamstring injury. As a result, he was replaced by Aaron Phillips with 23 minutes gone.

The full-back was instantly involved after coming on, as he cleared Mike Edwards’ header off the line from a corner to keep City level.

He was also booked for a challenge on ‘keeper Roy Carroll in the last action of a dull first-half.

The first clear opportunity of the second-half fell to Jack Finch just before the hour and he smashed a shot narrowly over from 20-yards.

But County took the lead on 71 minutes when Andy Webster miscued a clearance and Garry Thompson raced in one-on-one at an angle to place the ball into the far right-hand corner.

Danny Swanson then came on for Phillips with 13 minutes to play in an attacking move, but County had the next best chance, with Taylor McKenzie heading over from Gary Jones' free-kick.

City had a shout for a penalty with three minutes to play when Gary Madine burst into the area and was bundled over in the box by Haydn Hollis, but the referee waved away the Sky Blues protests.

Adam Barton headed a John Fleck cross onto the top of the net, but that was the last action in a game of few chances and the result now sees City slip to 19th in the League One table.
