16 May 2014

Check out #6 of our compiled list of the Sky Blues top ten moments on the pitch throughout the 2013/14 season

A new day brings about a new entry in our countdown of the Top Ten Sky Blues footballing moments of 2013/14!

The Sky Blues had enjoyed a fantastic first half of the season that had seen them rise to tenth in the League One table.

The turn of the New Year brought a New Year's Day away trip with travelling City fans hoping that 2014 would get off to the right start. And it did.

Today's number six is...

#6 - The New Year's Day win at Rotherham

City travelled to the New York Stadium having lost just one of their last six encounters although the Millers' form saw them occupy the last of the play-off places which meant the clash with Steven Evans' side would be no easy feat.

Joe Skarz's 35th minute opener served as an example of the threat Rotherham posed as the Sky Blues produced a lacklustre first 45 minutes.

They turned the game on its head in the second half though when Carl Baker slotted home a 71st minute penalty after Craig Morgan was given his marching orders after bringing down Callum Wilson in the area.

The equaliser gave City a platform to push on which they did and which they were rewarded for five minutes from time when Cyrus Christie headed them infront.

The most memorable part of that day though was Joe Murphy's last minute penalty save and the ensuing corner that followed which City cleared to Baker. The skipper fired home a third from well inside his own half while Millers goalkeeper Adam Collin tried to race back to his line after he had come up for the initial corner, handing City a winning start to 2014.

The day was marred though by an injury to Wilson whose dislocated shoulder left him out of action for more than two months.
