Sky Blues 'keeper targeting first team and speaks of his delight at signing new 3-year deal
Coventry City goalkeeper Lee Burge says he can concentrate on his progress into the first team after signing a three-year contract earlier this morning.
The 21-year old, who has been at the club since the age of 12, signed his first long-term deal after impressing in the Under 21's development league this season.
Now he is keen to continue his progression and target a place in the first team in the near future after serving as current City 'keeper Joe Murphy's understudy throughout the 2013/14 League One campaign.
"It's all a bit surreal to be honest," he said, "it's a great start to the summer, I don't have to worry now!
"I'll be able to come back fitter than ever, if I focus on that and come back better than i've ever been I can concentrate on trying to get into the first team. That's the target."
Burge has been named on the first team bench throughout this season, and although he has yet to clock up any game time, he says it has still been beneficial.
"This season has been great, playing regular football and being on the bench. That first team experience is great.
"Joe (Murphy) has done so well this season, and by watching I've learnt a lot from him."
Burge will continue to work on the training ground with legendary goalkeeping coach Steve Ogrizovic, and this is something that pleases him greatly.
"I can't wait to get back working with Oggy. He actually signed me when he was academy manager nine years ago.
"I've learned so much from him and I can't wait to train with him for three more years, although he probably won't say the same thing!"
Although most people will relax this summer by watching the World Cup, Burge says he is driven to keep in shape, and to impress Sky Blues boss Steven Pressley.
"I am here to play first team football. I want to impress the manager. He (Pressley) has said that he is really pleased with my progression.
"He also said that he believes in me, and I thank him a lot for that.
"I have my targets now, and I want to come back at my best. I have my targets and I want to succeed."
