'I enjoy friendly rivalry' - Willis

7 March 2014

The City defender is enjoying his run in the side and is looking forward to the Colchester United game...

Coventry City defender Jordan Willis has revealed he is ‘happy’ to be playing in his new right-back position, even if it means direct competition from fellow Sky Blue Cyrus Christie.

The two players have progressed from the City Academy to the first team together, and Willis says there is a friendly rivalry between the two players. “There is a bit of a rivalry,” he said, “just like there is between all of the players.

“We’re good mates off the pitch though so it’s all friendly. It’s good to have competition wherever you’re playing.

Willis has made 18 appearances for Coventry this season, and has shown his versatility by switching roles across the defence.

The 19-year old says he is happy to change when needed, and play a style that suits his game.

Willis added: “I’m enjoying playing right-back. Although centre-back is my natural position, I’m happy to play wherever.

“The gaffer wants me to play there more defensively. I’m happy to do that, I see myself as more of a defensive minded player.

“I haven’t got the skills going forward yet, so I’m happy to stay back!”

Willis is in contention for tomorrow’s game away at Colchester United, and he is hoping to form an effective partnership with midfielder Michael Petrasso.

“Tomorrow’s going to be a hard game, but hopefully I can link up with Michael, and give him some service. That’ll allow him to put some balls into the box.

“Hopefully we can get the ball down and play some good football, and score a few goals.”
