"I was ready to go out on loan, I want to keep improving." Coventry City's Matthew Pennington

The Sky Blues defender also believes that City can progress to the Johnstone's Paint Trophy Area Final tonight at Bristol City...

Coventry City defender Matthew Pennington has expressed his desire to continue improving during his loan spell with the Sky Blues.

Pennington signed on loan from Everton last week initially until January 4th and made his debut in last week's derby with Walsall.

The defender says it was a joint decision from him and the Toffees to go out on loan and he is eager to use the chance to develop his game.

"I want to improve," Pennington said.

"Training with first team players is great and it helps to play with a competitive edge. The standards have been high, the training pitches top drawer and the training is really intense which is what I'm used to so that's great.

"I've settled in really well, the lads have been great to me, they've helped me out, got me involved and the first week has been great.

"I was ready to go on loan to get more experience as I was playing in the Under-21s with Everton. I put the idea forward and they agreed it would be good for me to go out and develop, it's working out well so far.

"I'm staying at a hotel, everyone has been dead nice and I'm getting such a good feel everywhere I've been. I was Tranmere last season but living at home, so I've made the next step to live away and I have no issues at all."

Pennington was on loan at Tranmere last season and faced tonight's opponents Bristol City at Ashton Gate.

The 20-year-old believes the Sky Blues can win the game and progress to the Johnstone's Paint Trophy Area Final, despite being the underdogs against the current League One leaders.

He continued: "Obviously it is a great chance to go all the way to Wembley if we progress and I don't see why we can't win.

"I've not felt any negativity and the lads are in really good spirits, we're ready for the game.

"I played against them last season, they are a really good team and top of the league, so it will be a test.

"We lost to them back in October at the Ricoh, but I have no doubt the team will stand up to the occasion."
