Take a look as we profile Keith Houchen and re-watch that famous goal in the 1987 FA Cup final against Tottenham Hotspur...
In the 12 days leading up to Christmas we're giving Sky Blues supporters a '12 days of Christmas' feature, where every day in the build up to the big day we'll be reflecting on legends and big matches, as well as offering some fantastic competitions to celebrate the festive period. On Day Ten, we focus on possibly Coventry City’s most famous No.10, Keith Houchen.
The Middlesbrough-born forward started his career at Hartlepool United in 1978 after being let go by Chesterfield as an apprentice.
The Spireites were soon regretting their decision as Houchen went on to become a huge success at Victoria Road, scoring 65 goals in 170 appearances over a four-year spell with the club.
Leyton Orient took advantage of Hartlepool’s poor financial position in 1982 to pick up the prolific front-man for a bargain £25,000. Houchen notched 20 goals in 76 appearances over two-years with the London side before he handed in a transfer request to move to York City.
In his two years with York, Houchen played a crucial role in the Fourth Division Championship win before Scunthorpe United spent big money to sign Houchen in 1986. He was signed for £40,000 but also received a car and a one-off payment of £10,000.
He regretted the move almost immediately and after a reserve game between City and Scunthorpe, the Sky Blues signed the striker for £60,000 in 1986. He struggled with injury when he first moved to the club but it was his exploits in the 1987 FA Cup run and final which would guarantee legendary status.
Houchen’s close-range finish at Old Trafford against Manchester United in the third round got the Sky Blues on the way before he scored an impressive against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough in the quarter-finals, right in front of the City fans in the Leppings Lane End.
He scored against Leeds United in the semi-final at Hillsborough but his goal in the final will go down as one of the greatest ever in an FA Cup final.
It won the Match of the Day Goal of the Season award and helped City seal a famous 3-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur.
Over his time at City, Houchen scored 13 goals for the Sky Blues over 64 appearances before moving on to Hibernian in 1989. He ended his career back at Hartlepool in 1996 and will ever be remembered for THAT goal in the 1987 FA Cup final.
