Sky Blues slip to defeat against Posh at London Road despite spirited second half performance

Coventry City slipped to a narrow 1-0 defeat to Peterborough United at London Road after an early headed opener from Kgosi Ntlhe.

Ntlhe connected with Danny Swanson's corner delivery to power a header past Joe Murphy from six yards after five minutes.

City boss Steven Pressley made two changes to his side for the clash with Posh, bringing in Cyrus Christie and Anton Robinson to replace Dan Seaborne and Carl Baker.

The Sky Blues gave themselves a task early on though when the home side got themselves in front after just five minutes.

Danny Swanson's first touch from a crossfield ball took him around Jordan Willis who had to put the ball behind. Swanson then delivered an outswinger from the resulting corner which picked out Nthle to power a header home from six yards.

Jack Baldwin then went close for Peterborough after 15 minutes when a clearance dropped to him 25 yards out which he hit on the volley. The effort looped over Joe Murphy but dropped just wide of the post.

The Sky Blues got their first effort of the afternoon on target after 21 minutes though when Nathan Eccleston wriggled his way down the byline and cut back before shooting from a tight angle, Bobby Olejnik parrying the effort away for the hosts.

City went close again eight minutes before the break when deep delivery at the back post from Mark Marshall found Cyrus Christie whose glancing header flashed just wide.

Steven Pressley's men then started the second half in positive fashion, first when Marshall fired into the side netting with the half only a few seconds old and then when David Prutton received a clever flick from half time substitute Carl Baker to get around the back four only to be crowded out by the corner flag.

The contrast in starts between both of the halves was clearly noticeable as the Sky Blues continued to enjoy more of the possession and they very nearly got an equaliser after 54 minutes.

Cyrus Christie bustled his way through the Posh back line before slipping a short ball to Eccleston who sliced his first time effort wide of the near post from 12 yards.

Wilson was inches away from a leveller for City after 73 minutes though when he nearly capitalised on an mistake from Olejnik.

The goalkeeper hesitated coming off his line, allowing Wilson to tap the ball past him although he was prevented from stretching his boot out to poke the ball home by attention from Ben Nugent and Jack Baldwin in what was to be the Sky Blues' last chance to rescue a point.
