City's deadline day round-up!

2 September 2013

Development Director Steve Waggott speaks about the club's deadline day activities

Coventry City’s first team squad remains the same despite frenetic activity on transfer deadline day - but the club has cut its wage bill with the departures of three players.

The Sky Blues development director Steve Waggott and manager Steven Pressley had to fend off interest in several players while also trying to add at least one to the squad.

Waggott said: “It is common knowledge that a couple of our players were targets for other clubs. We were determined to keep the pool of players we have assembled because we believe the squad is developing extremely well.

“That did not prove to be easy but we were steadfast and had the owner’s total backing.

“I would think every club wanted to add to its squad and we did want to bring a player in, but it did not work out. It was not a pressing need, just someone we felt would add to our strength in a certain area.

“We thought we had an agreement but the selling club changed the type of deal, and it no longer suited us.”

Gary McSheffrey, Steve Jennings and Kevin Malaga also all left the club before the deadline.

Waggott added: “The three were the last remaining players who were not in the manager’s plans this season, so to have them all leaving and off our books is a positive move for all parties.

“Gary is a Coventry lad and has had two spells here and we wish him, as well as Steve and Kevin, all the best in their future careers.”
