Coventry City Under-18s recorded a fantastic 5-2 victory over Brentford, despite going behind early on at the Alan Higgs Centre.

James Maddison notched a hat-trick with Devon Kelly-Evans and substitute Jordan Shipley completing the scoring to secure a well-deserved win.

With captain Ivor Lawton out injured, Academy Manager Gregor Rioch had to shuffle his side around with Ben Stevenson and Ryan Quinn starting in central midfield.

The home side started slowly and found themselves behind just five minutes into the game as a deflected shot from Brentford's Moore beat goalkeeper Alex Gott to put the away side ahead.

Brentford could have found themselves further in front within the first 20 minutes but Gott was on top form, producing two brilliant saves to keep City in the game.

Once the Sky Blues found their rhythm, the chances began to come for City with Courtney Baker-Richardson denied by a smart save and the post just before the half-hour.

City deservedly levelled seven minutes from half-time when James Maddison found space just outside the area and picked out the bottom right-hand corner to make sure the sides were level going into the break.

Rioch's side only had to wait four minutes into the second half to go ahead when the impressive Devon Kelly-Evans picked up a loose ball in the area to curl the ball into the left-hand corner after good work down the right from Ryan Smith.

From that point, City began to dominate the game and Maddison added his second of the game in the 57th minute when he produced a close-range finish from a brilliant Baker-Richardson cross.

Jordan Shipley came on mid-way through the second half and he added a fourth in the last 15 minutes when he coolly slotted home after a through ball from the tireless Baker-Richardson.

Brentford did get a goal back but it was City's day and Maddison got his hat-trick late on with a classy clipped finish over the keeper.
