Under 18s midfielder James Maddison rewarded with first team squad number and weekend trip to the Lamex

Coventry City Under 18s midfielder James Maddison has been handed a first team squad number and will be part of the squad that travels to Stevenage on Saturday.

The 16-year-old has been rewarded with a step up to the first team ranks with squad number 36 after a string of impressive performances for the Under 18s as well an appearance for the club's development squad.

Maddison has netted five goals in the Under 18s first five games of their Professional Development League campaign including a hat-trick in last weekend's 5-2 home win over Brentford.

City boss Steven Pressley said: "I've always been a believer in trusting my young players and James has certainly earned the right to be part of the squad given the way he has applied himself so far this season.

"The experience of being around the first team on matchday will be good for his development and there is an established path through to the first team for our young players as has been proven most recently with the likes of Ryan Haynes.

"I hope James makes the most of the opportunity because we think highly of him."
