'Always great to score' - Clarke

5 October 2013

Leon Clarke has praised the City side after his goal separates the two sides at Broadhall Way....

Coventry City striker Leon Clarke believes getting out of the bottom four is a 'major boost' to the squad after beating Stevenage.

The Sky Blues rose to 18th in the League One table after securing all three points with a battling performance at Broadhall Way.

Backed by over 1200 City fans, Steven Pressley's side rarely looked troubled as Clarke scored the only goal of the game after capitalising on a defensive error in the first half.

Clarke believes the City side can now push on from the win after scoring his sixth goal of the season.

The City striker said: "It was a really good performance from the side because this is a difficult place to come and get a result.

"They are a really physical side but we played some great football and I think we definitely deserved the win because of the way we used the ball.

"When we clawed back the ten points, we looked towards the top half of the table but with the losses, we had to come here and prove how good we are.

"As a group of players, we can take a lot of pride in the performance. I think the team remembered the way we were playing at the start of the season and it is a major boost to us."

Callum Wilson has scored eight goals already this season but with his goal against Stevenage, Clarke is now only two goals away from Wilson's tally.

Clarke added: "As strikers, you always want to score. But today, it didn't matter who scored, it was all about getting that goal and defending our lead.

"Obviously, for me, on a personal note, it was nice to score and I know Callum (Wilson) is still checking to see who else has scored in the league, and he is still up there.

"There is obviously a bit of competition but that is only healthy and when we win, we win as a team.

"To come here with the young team we have got, the side deserve huge credit. Good to see (Louis) Garner get his first team debut and he did well when he came on.

"Despite the last two results, we have always believed we can get a win from any match we are in."
