Wilson stars in Under-21's defeat

Callum Wilson's all-star display wasn't enough as City lose 3-1...

Coventry City Under-21’s were downed 3-1 at the Ricoh Arena by Leicester City despite an impressive display from Callum Wilson.

Jacob Blyth scored a brace and Marko Futacs converted from the spot to seal the win for the Foxes with Danny Philliskirk grabbing his first goal for the Sky Blues.

The Sky Blues named a strong line-up for the local derby with David Bell and John Fleck starting in midfield, but found themselves behind early on thanks to two goals in two minutes.

Leicester’s Conor Clifford pumped the ball long for Jacob Blyth who was able to poke home past Chris Dunn to put the away side ahead in the 11th minute.

The Foxes doubled their lead just a minute later when George Taft was fouled in the area and Marko Futacs converted from 12 yards.

Shaun Jeffers headed narrowly over from a Conor Thomas cross five minutes later as City looked to get themselves back into the game.

In the 21st minute, the Sky Blues did just that thanks to great work from Callum Wilson. He was able to hold off two Leicester defenders before back-heeling to Danny Philliskirk who slotted it past Conrad Logan.

City continued to grow into the game with midfield duo Thomas and John Fleck controlling proceedings in the middle of the park.

Three minutes before half-time, City went close when Jordan Clarke provided great support down the right and Bell crossed for Jeffers who glanced wide.

After a slow start to the second half, it was the Sky Blues who looked the more likely side to score with both Wilson and Jeffers going close.

Wilson’s low shot was brilliantly saved at the feet of Conrad Logan before Jeffers’ shot from outside the area was agonisingly wide.

City continued pressing forward when 15 minutes from time, when the impressive Jeffers crossed low for Wilson who fired at goal but Logan somehow saved to keep the away side ahead.

City kept up the pressure until the final moments but the Foxes sealed the win three minutes from time. Jack McCourt caught Fleck in possession and found Blyth who slammed home his second of the game.

Substitute Kevin Malaga thought he had headed home from a Will Roberts free-kick late on but it was ruled out for offside.
