The Sky Blues clinched the award for the dramatic comeback against Preston
The Sky Blues got the nod from the judging panel for their dramatic 3-2 victory over npower League 1 rivals Preston North End at the Ricoh Arena, which saw them strike twice in time added on to book a Northern Area Final against Crewe Alexandra.
Coventry took the lead in front of the Sky television cameras thanks to a first half goal from Steven Jennings, only for Preston to turn the game on its head after the break thanks to a header from Luke Foster and a deflected Stuart Beavon effort.
But the hosts were not to be denied and, after Carl Baker levelled in injury time, striker Leon Clarke popped up with the winner just two minutes later to avoid the prospect of a penalty shoot-out amid scenes of jubilation amongst the home supporters.
“The tie between Coventry and Preston was an excellent game between two very good sides,” said Johnstone’s Trade Brand & Sponsorship Manager Ben Wilde.
“Both were desperate to progress and it produced a fantastic advert for the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy in front of a nationwide television audience.
“The atmosphere when Coventry turned the game around during injury time was electric and, after all that drama, they were certainly worthy winners of the Team of the Round award.”
Coventry will now receive the Team of the Round trophy for the Area Semi-Finals.
