'They can write us off' - Baker

1 August 2013

Coventry City captain Carl Baker is looking to continue last season's form...

Ahead of the 2013/14 League One season, with the transfer embargo still in place, many pundits have wrote off City's chances this season.

But, this has been described as 'perfect' by Coventry City captain Carl Baker who believes this serves as brilliant motivation for the squad.

Having won four pre-season matches and drawn against Eredivise side Heracles Almelo, City are in fine shape to attack the new season.

The City captain is happy for pundits to write the squad's chances off this year as he will take extra delight when they are proved wrong.

Baker said: "I have seen in a few papers already that we have been written off and that is music to my ears.

"The gaffer has posted some of those clippings on the TV's around the dressing room with them saying we could go down, and that is perfect.

"It just makes us that little bit more angry. There is no better feeling than going out on the pitch and proving people wrong.

"We are looking forward to doing that as the squad is in great shape and we are ready to give it our all."

The former Stockport man enjoyed a brilliant season last year, winning the Player of the Year, Player's Player of the Year and Goal of the Year.

Baker is looking to continue that form into the new season, starting with Saturday's trip to Crawley.

He added: "I don't want my standards to drop. I have had a great pre-season and I have stayed injury-free which is always a bonus.

"I have took part in every training session this pre-season and I can't wait to continue my form.

"We need to have a good start to the season as last year's start to the season set us back a long way and we were always catching up.

"I am confident I can score even more goals this season and keep leading City forward."
