Coventry City's Under-18 starlet George Thomas scored for Wales Under-17s last night during their 4-0 win over Malta.

City's Cian Harries also started the match and had two goals disallowed during the game as the pair continue to get international recognition during their time with the City Academy.

The match, the first of two friendly meetings, is in preparation for the forthcoming UEFA Under-17 qualifiers in Slovenia in September.

William Abbotts, Joe Morrell, George Thomas and Ioan Evans scored the goals for Geraint Williams' Welsh side at Dragon Park in Newport yesterday.

Academy Manager Gregor Rioch is delighted the pair continue to get the international recognition they deserve.

He said: "The pair have settled into pre-season training fantastically well. They have adapted from full-time education to full-time football very well.

"It is great to see both of them playing so well for Wales Under-17s. Whenever one of our lads get to represent their country, it is something we take a lot of pride in.

"It gives them an opportunity to travel around Europe and play their football on that stage. The Under-18s are currently training three afternoons a week at Ryton and it has definitely had an impact.

"Under the eyes of the first-team management, they're constantly monitored and that is outstanding as we have seen more effort from the group."
