Hinckley Utd 0-8 Coventry City

14 July 2012

Andy Thorn's men go goal crazy in first pre-season friendly at Greene King Stadium

Coventry City started their 2012/13 League One preparations brilliantly, scoring eight goals with seven different scorers.

Will Roberts grabbed a brace, Gary McSheffrey, Louis Garner, Shaun Jeffers, Aaron Phillips, Jordan Willis, Louis Garner and Roy O'Donovan have all scored in a game where they could be even further ahead.

City started on the attack in their first outing ahead of the new season and stole a lead within the first five minutes. Gary McSheffrey did well to get down the left, past two United defenders, and his deflected shot found its way past Scott Furlong in goal to put City ahead.

The Sky Blues continued to press forward and almost doubled their lead soon after. Roy O'Donovan was slipped in behind by Billy Daniels but his delicate flick went narrowly past the post.

New signing Kevin Malaga looked very assured in defence successfully dealing with Hinckley United's tall striker Jason Bradley on several occasions early on.

He also showed his finesse when his 50-yard cross field ball found McSheffrey on the left and his low cross almost found O'Donovan at the near post but the defender did well to clear in the 20th minute.

Louis Garner started the game after having an impressive season in the Academy side and his neat flick past two defenders provided O'Donovan with a chance but he curled his shot narrowly wide. Moments later, O'Donovan was put clean through by Joe Henderson but after rounding the keeper, Hinckley's Mark Dudley got back to clear off the line.

City extended their lead on the half-hour when Carl Baker neatly slipped in Louis Garner and with the Hinckley defence nowhere to be seen, he neatly slipped the ball home.

Garner's impressive performance continued shortly after when his ball broke the offside trap to put Roy O'Donovan in and he finally bagged the goal his hard work had deserved.

With a completely changed starting eleven featuring John Fleck, Kevin Kilbane and Stephen Elliott, Coventry continued to press forward. Ten minutes into the second half, Will Roberts made it four when he collected a loose ball out of defence and slotted home from outside the area.

The Hinckley defence were there for the taking and City took full advantage with two goals in the space of five minutes. After some wonderful football, between Kilbane and Shaun Jeffers, it was latters powerful cross to the back-post which found Roberts to head home his second of the game.

Directly from the kick-off, City won a corner and as the Hinckley defence failed to clear the cross, Jordan Willis was on hand to fire home off the bar.

Roberts almost grabbed his hat-trick in the last ten minutes of the game when Conor Thomas did brilliantly to pick him out on the right but he curling shot went agonisingly wide.

Late on, Coventry made it seven when Fleck and Garner shared a neat interchange, and the Scottish playmaker put Aaron Phillips in down the left who did well to slot home past the keeper.

With minutes left in the game, Jeffers added an eighth to make it a great start to Coventry City's 2012/13 League One preparations.
